Do microcurrent devices really work to plump, tighten, firm and lift your skin?

More than ever before, Australians are wanting to recreate the latest in-salon skin treatments at home. But do DIY microcurrent facial devices really deliver on the promises of a more lifted, plumped and toned face?

Some things are unfortunately the domain of the young: firm jawlines, sculpted cheek bones, wide-awake eyes. And the shortcut to regaining those youthful features has traditionally required painful, risky and expensive surgery.

But the rise of “tweakments” – that is, non-invasive treatments such as LED, radio frequency, IPL and microcurrent facials – has meant there are now more ways than ever to get Bella Hadid’s cheekbones. Or something similar.

Microcurrent has led the trend for at-home usage, with a slew of handheld devices on the market. But how do they work and, more importantly, do they work at all?

Dr Michele Squire, PhD scientist and founder of Qr8 MediSkin, says “The metal contact points (balls or wands) of these devices are applied to the skin’s surface where they deliver tiny amounts of electricity.”

A conducting gel or serum is added to the ball or wand to transfer the electrical current to the skin.

“This supposedly increases cellular ATP [adenosine triphosphate], which is the energy source used by our cells to perform their functions. In turn, all this extra cellular energy is said to build muscle and increase collagen production to plump, lift and tone skin, and smooth wrinkles. Device companies explain this as akin to a ‘workout’ for the skin."

Glowing reviews and celebrity endorsements aside, when it comes to data on whether these at-home devices are effective, the results are scarce. This lack of research also means they’re not recommended for use by pregnant women and people with certain health conditions.

Naomi McCullum, founder of The Manse clinic in Sydney, says: “I recommend that customers do their research online and also speak with reputable beauty professionals before choosing to purchase at-home beauty devices.”

And while adding a skin-plumping massage to your daily routine may sound like a no-brainer, you also need to remember that microcurrent results are only temporary.

“In the absence of clinical data, what these devices likely do is massage the skin, temporarily increasing circulation and muscle tone, and producing a short-term contouring effect,” Squire notes. “This might be nice for a special occasion but you need to perform it every morning for your daily ‘lift’ – and it will drop throughout the day.”
